About the Cover

The mullite structure exhibits
significant application value as an
SOFC cathode material due to its
low thermal expansion coefficient
and absence of alkaline earth
elements, eliminating the need for an
additional blocking layer. However,
its catalytic activity remains to be
further improved. In this study, a
SmMn2O5-NiMn2O4 composite cathode
with a mullite-spinel structure was
synthesized via a solid-liquid
composite method through
self-assembly. The synergistic
effect between the two phases
overcame the performance
bottleneck of single-phase
materials. The composite cathode
prepared with an equimolar ratio
enabled the single cell to achieve
a peak power density of
1069.82 mW·cm–2 at 800 °C,
which is 3.24 times that of the pure
SmMn2O5 cathode. Furthermore,
under galvanostatic discharge
testing at 750°C and 540 mW·cm–2
for 150 h, the voltage degradation
rate was approximately 5.62%/kh.
These results demonstrate that the
self-assembled SmMn2O5-NiMn2O4
composite cathode possesses both
excellent electrochemical
performance and good stability,
rendering it a highly promising
cathode material for
intermediate-temperature SOFCs.
