Abstract

The improvement of corrosion performance of epoxy coatings by modification with "active" and "non-active" silanes is presented."Active" silanes are defined as ones having functional groups that can react with the epoxy groups in the epoxy resin, usually amino-silanes."Non-active" silanes are defined as ones not reacting with the epoxy groups, but can react with the hydroxyl groups in the epoxy backbone by the condensation reactions under the catalysis of organic tin compounds. The FTIR results showed that both the "active" and "non-active" silanes had been successfully grafted onto the epoxy resin.Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS) and accelerated corrosion test(Machu test) showed that the corrosion performance of epoxy coatings could be improved by chemical modification with both the "active" and "non-active" silanes.
